Events, Workshops, Seminars (COP15)

An important aspect of raising the profile of water and climate issues and influencing the negotiations is organising events, seminars and workshops alongside the talks. The GPPN organised a range of events throughout 2009 in the run up to COP15, including:

Thursday 2nd April: Bridging the Water and Climate Agendas (Side Event) Climate Change Talks, Bonn, 30th March – 10th April 2009

This event shared the findings from the GPPN consultation and distributed the Key Messages Report.
Over 40 people attended – both negotiators and civil society representatives, and the event was addressed by:

  • Henk Van Schaik, Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate

  • Thomas Stratenwerth, German Federal Ministry for the Environment

  • Sara Shaw, Tearfund

  • Hannah Stoddart, Global Public Policy Network on Water Management (Download Power Point)

Sunday 7th June: Workshop - Water and Climate Change Adaptation Climate change Talks, Bonn, 1st – 12th June 2009

This workshop was organised in association with the German Ministry for the Environment (BMU) to generate more in-depth discussion on water and climate change. The workshop was addressed by experts from across government, UN agencies and civil society – a full agenda of the workshop can be downloaded here

Monday 8th June: Bridging the Water and Climate Agendas (Side Event) Climate Change Talks, Bonn, 1st – 12th June 2009

This side event built on the outcomes of the Water and Climate Change Adaptation workshop (above), and involved a very similar agenda and speakers. It was attended by over 60 people, and was also selected for webcast by the UNFCCC Secretariat. You can access the full agenda and watch the full side event on-demand here.

Monday 2nd November: Bridging the Water and Climate Agendas (Side Event) Climate Change Talks, Barcelona, 2nd – 6th November 2009

This side event took place ahead of the Water Day at the climate change negotiations in Barcelona. At the event the GPPN called for the reinsertion of a reference to water resources in the adaptation negotiating text. The event was also addressed by Karin Lexen of the Stockholm International Water Institute, Joakim Harlin of UNDP, and Joseph Halder of the NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation in Bangladesh.

Tuesday 3rd November: Water Day Climate Change Talks, Barcelona, 2nd – 6th November 2009

On 3rd November the GPPN hosted a "Water Day" in collaboration with UN Water alongside the climate change negotiations in Barcelona.
The day set out to show that water is a critical and cross-cutting concern for climate change adaptation and mitigation. There were six sessions which focused on climate change and a range of water-related issues: Water and Livelihoods; Water, Ecosystems and Forests; Water and Land; Water and Regional/Transboundary Cooperation; Water and Land; Water and Gender; and Water and Energy.

Wednesday 9th December: Bridging the Water and Climate Agendas 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Copenhagen, 7th – 18th December 2009

Together with the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the GPPN held a side event during the climate change negotiations in Copenhagen that attracted over 200 participants. The event was chaired and moderated by Mike Mueller of the GWP, and included speakers from the GPPN, WWF and IUCN.
