3 December, Africa Pavilion
This full day seminar will focus on generating practical solutions to place water at the centre of development and to ensure that water takes a central place in the UNFCCC negotiations.
Countries that have well developed water management systems are better able to cope with extreme events. Investments in better water management and infrastructure build resilience to climate change hazards and impacts. Countries adapt and build resilience to climate change through managing water resources well and responding appropriately to water-related hazards.
On the mitigation side, interventions, including hydropower, biofuels, carbon storage and sustainable forest management, are all reliant on sustainable water resource management. Mitigation solutions such as those for Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) cannot be effective without water resources. Equally, projects that are promoted as part of the carbon market mechanisms need water resources.
Water, Climate and Development Day will highlight water’s relationship to economic development and a diverse range of issues and mechanisms under the UNFCCC – including adaptation; mitigation; Finance; renewable energy; Technology, REDD; Land-Use; Land-Use Change; and Forestry.
International experts and senior policy makers in development, water, finance and climate will discuss and generate perspectives on:
- Global policy solutions for adaptation and mitigation
- Infrastructure, technical and ecosystem solutions
- Climate change information for water resources
- Financial and institutional solutions
The day will end with a high level Panel that will see global leaders and experts reflect on the solutions and generate perspectives for integrating water into the climate regime.
High Level Dialogue 2, 6 December, Africa Pavilion
The outcomes from the Water, Climate and Development Day will be presented and discussed in the High Level Panel 2: How to integrate Water in the climate regime and economic development.
